Unless every major paper and news portal have clubbed together to perform the world’s most elaborate April Fools’ Day gag, Alan Shearer is set to take charge of Newcastle’s final eight games.
At the time of writing, there has been no official word on the Newcastle site, and not even a hint of a quote from anyone at the club, but the Magpies have made no secret of their desperation to bring in a big name manager with the determination and nous to keep them in the top flight. Instead, they appear to have opted for a man with absolutely no experience, and whose attempts at analysis on Match of the Day are woefully simplistic.
Most Newcastle fans will be delighted if the appointment is confirmed today, and may cite Franz Beckenbauer and Jurgen Klinsmann as successful players who made the move into high level management with no experience. On the other hand, the move seems like a huge roll of the dice on Mike Ashley’s part, or a desperate act from a man looking to take the heat away from himself and the rest of the cockney mafia at a crucial stage in the season.

Surely this has got to be a poorly-timed April Fools’ prank
Newcastle are about to appoint Alan Shearer as manager until the end of the season, according to Sky Sports.
Doubts have been cast over whether Joe Kinnear is fit to fulfil all his managerial duties after undergoing heart surgery but Shearer has always been quick to dismiss speculation about him taking over in the past.
The Spoiler is still sceptical. Perhaps someone moved their clocks forward a few hours too many on Saturday night and got the timing of their wind-up wrong. Surely even Mike Ashley wouldn’t make such a risky and illogical decision and heighten Newcastle’s reputation as a laughing stock so close to April Fools’ Day.
UPDATE:BBC Sport’s news ticker now claims that they also understand Shearer is about to be appointed. Is this actually going to happen?
