Manchester Utd star spends £400 on humble staycation

He may earn over £100,000-a-week, and he may run his own luxury lifestyle magazine, but Rio Ferdinand has been living like someone who is actually affected by the global economic downturn. In a move that suggests the Manchester Utd star possesses a degree of humility that is very rare among top flight players, he was spotted with his family at Presthaven Sands, a Haven Holidays camp in North Wales.

The Telegraph done a report what says:

Dismissing more tropical getaways, Ferdinand decided to take his family to the small town in Denbighshire known as the “gateway to North Wales coast” where “mountain air meets salty sea breezes”.

And in the spirit of Britain’s summer of “staycation” the £100,000-a-week Premiership star booked his wife Rebecca Ellison and two sons into the Haven park for a credit-crunch busting weekend break in late August.

He did, however, choose a top-of-the-range “Prestige” caravan - at £400 for the weekend.

Swinging bachelor Frank Lampard has been enjoying his freedom in the Nevada desert recently, and has been occupying most of his time with a role as the Wynn Hotel’s resident bikini inspector.

When the sun goes down, however, the Chelsea star has been hitting the casino, and it seems he’s been having more luck at the tables than he has attempting to disguise his poolside excitement with that awkward cross-legged pose.

According to The Sun, Lampsie won £300,000 playing roulette and blackjack in a single evening. That’s enough to pay for his plush accommodation, or perhaps a very good night at Spearmint Rhino.

Rio Ferdinand is currently enjoying a lad’s holiday in Israel (ex-Chelsea star and current complete muppet Jody Morris is among those accompanying him).

Either he is taking part in some good ol’ fashioned stag games (prior to his wedding with Rebecca Ellison in August), or he is preparing to relinquish his reputation as the best dressed man in the Old Trafford dressing room.

Manchester Utd star says ‘it’s good to be different’

The Spoiler is no stranger to bucking the trend of conventional fashion - one time we wore a belt that didn’t match with our shoes - but we would probably draw the line at stepping out in hot pants and a skin tight shirt, with a pretty little flower in our hair.

Speaking from his current holiday destination Los Angeles (the place where paraded his waxed mahogany pins in a dashing pair of silver hotpants last year), the Manchester Utd winger has defended his love of ridiculous outfits:

“I don’t know why people are so interested in what I wear on holiday. Last year, when I was in LA, everyone was talking about my tight trunks.

“Have you seen what people in LA wear? I was the most normal dressed person over there.”

“Anyway, what’s wrong with wearing tight pants? They look good and it’s better than having tan lines down your legs.”

In a world where tan lines correlate directly to the tightness of the material around one’s groin, this is faultless logic.

The current economic downturn has certainly taken its toll on the nation’s workforce, but is also appears to have had a damning effect on those who don’t do anything for a living.

According to today’s Daily Telegraph, professional leisure seeker Alex Curran is feeling the pinch. The WAG, who spends ninety per cent of her free time and money in Liverpool’s Cricket boutique, is cutting back on unnecessary expenditure:

“I think people - especially Wags - are becoming more conscious of spending now.”

Mrs Steven Gerrard now faces the humiliating prospect of only being able to visit the hairdressers twice a week (how will she cope?) and must do own own nails, just like the common people who live on the numbered streets:

“I’m not that bothered about pampering. I do my nails myself. The nail varnish I’m wearing was only £2 from a bargain bin!” she said, insisting that she was not high maintenance.”

Steven Gerrard’s wages are unlikely to have been affected by the credit crunch, and his legal fees can’t be that high, so we can’t see a reason why Alex would actually have to cut back on spending. We suspect her thrifty attitude merely an act of solidarity with her loyal Closer Magazine readers, but the pneumatic blonde fails to see the devastating knock-on effect of her actions: how many nail bars and bikini manufacturers will suffer from her lack of custom? How many Dubai poolside waiters will be laid off? Will the fake tan industry be able to survive a decrease in orders from its greatest ambassador?

MOTD host and WAG take sixth break in ten months

According to Britain’s favourite red top tabloid, Gary Lineker is currently living it up in Barbados with his current lady friend Danielle Bux. There’s nothing strange about that, except when you consider it is the third time they have been to the Caribbean destination in the past ten months, and in the same brief time period, Lineker’s gruelling work schedule has allowed for three additional romantic getaways in Miami, Vienna and Rome. It’s clearly a hard life working for the Beeb.

WAGs currently drifting on the periphery of the Premier League (we’re looking at you, Meares and Lloyd) have much to learn from Danielle. By bagging an ex-pro rather than a current player, she may have to put up with moaning about back pain and receding hairlines, but there’s no pesky season to get in the way of the good life. Enjoy those cocktails, Ms. Bux, you and your initiative thoroughly earned them.

Man bathes, woman goes out drinking…

For those of you who spent the weekend swanning around at the Cartier International Polo in Windsor, you didn’t miss too much. Cristiano Ronaldo continued his vigorous stateside holidaying, further pushing the limits of his tan, which is now a deep leather. Whether or not he will ever return to playing football is anyone’s guess.

Meanwhile in the breezy English getaway of Gants Hill in Essex, the big talk was that Danielle Lloyd had come to town to enjoy some wines and cheeses at Faces nightclub. She turned up wearing her trademark Rolling Stones vest/dress, accompanied by the coolest man in the world.

A perfectly able-bodied young footballer, he demands that his bikini’d girlfriend, Vanja Bosnic, helps with his suncream application. What’s wrong with that? You probably just yelled at your computer, punching your desk as hard as you could. Well, he insists that she even covers his front bits, from chest to stomach - places he could easily reach using his own greasy hands.

Poolside behaviour has never been stranger or more demeaning.
