Striker feels entitled to £700,000 loyalty payout

A few short days ago, Jermain Defoe was reunited with both Harry Redknapp and Tottenham Hotspur. He was delighted with the move, and said he never wanted to leave the club in the first place. If this wasn’t a big enough kick in Portsmouth’s teeth, the nightclub aficionado is arguing that he is entitled to £700,000 worth of loyalty payments from the south coast club:

When Defoe joined Portsmouth for £7.5m last January he had a clause in his contract that he would be paid an extra £200,000 for every season at the club.

With 3½-years left on his deal the striker was due an extra £700,000 if he remained at Fratton Park.

The Defoe camp’s argument was that Portsmouth did not have to sell him unless they wanted too - and therefore they should pay the full bonus.

Legally, Defoe is within his rights to make his claim, but after treating Portsmouth like a mistress and Tottenham like the soul mate he cheated on and never should have left, let’s hope Tony Adams and co told him where to stick it.
