The Owls give a chance to a polite young Frenchman
In January 1992, Trevor Francis’ Sheffield Wednesday attempted to fuel the trend of importing foreign talent by giving a trial to a promising Frenchman named Eric Cantona.
Despite not speaking a word of English, they found him to be very polite, and were quite satisfied that his bad tempered days were behind him. When he impolitely joined rivals Leeds instead and proceeded to spit and kick his way through the rest of his career, they probably decided their initial assessment was a little off the mark.
As Off The Post point out, we love the fact that Wednesday appear to be training in a school sports hall - how humble those pre-Premier League days were…

WAG of the Day
Need someone to lift a heavy weight or hold up a wall?

Not only did ex Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday hitman Mark Bright have the honour of scoring the first ever goal at the new Wembley (in a charity match), but he also called Michelle Gayle his wife for ten years.
You may recognise her as Ian Beale’s PA in Eastenders, or if you are into mid nineties pop, you may remember one of her many fine compositions from the musical hit parade.

RING THE CHANGES
Charlton manager knows how to keep fans off his back

After stumbling across comments made by Alan Pardew following Charlton’s 2-0 home defeat to Bristol City, The Spoiler was struck with a sense of déjà vu. So we looked at comments the former West Ham boss has made after his side’s last five defeats and started to see a pattern emerging. See if you can spot it:
Pardew after losing to Wolves: “Some players were just a wee bit below [par] but I have to take into account that Wolves are really flying at the minute. So there’s a lot of thinking to do between now and Doncaster.”
Pardew after losing to Sheffield Wednesday: “We had a few low performances today and I’ll have to look at the selection of the side because there are one or two who are desperate to have a go now and I might have to look at a change.”
