Romance fans will be bitterly disappointed today, with news that Kate Winslet has managed to make a pig’s ear of another marriage - she’s divorcing Sam Mendes, the man who directed the slow moving Jamie Redknapp hairstyle biopic, Jarhead. As expected, showbiz desks are completely furious about this.
One group who couldn’t give a monkeys, however, are the hard working sports writers. Not big Winslet fans, these office heroes have avoided the furore entirely, and have been instead been writing about football. Now that the season is entering its final stages, very soon a giant magnifying glass will turn onto the players who may or may not make the England squad for South Africa.
For some, it’s a race against time - with physical and emotional injuries to repair - whilst others will be battling to hit top form between now and the campaign’s end. It’s all to play for, so now is s good a time as any to start with the predictions.
In romantic terms, Mourinho has the look of a man who would dedicate his life to landing his dream girl. Yes, he’d badger her from time to time when he was feeling sensual/drunk, but he’d also give her space to mull over the proposed union. It might take years, but he’s Jose Mourinho, he’ll get there in the end.
All of which leads completely seamlessly to Mourinho’s pursuit of Steven Gerrard. As everyone knows, he came within stroking distance of landing his man at Chelsea in 2004, and the word from the Daily Mail is that he’s going to have another bash in the summer, making the Liverpool skipper his “number one target” during Inter’s transfer window shopping spree.
Stevie G will, of course, have hit the ripe old age 30 by then, and with debts to clear, it would surely be tempting to the boardroom to cash in on one of their star players.
But should Gerrard go? Let us know with a vote and a comment.
Well, John Terry can breathe a small sigh of relief, as his front page star begins to fade with news that the fashion designer Alexander McQueen decided to call time on it all, and will surely now dominate the red tops and broadsheets well into the weekend.
Terry, at best, can expect a double page spread in the early teen pages. Saved by fashion. Anyway, The Spoiler shan’t be shifting focus from important football news to entertain such morbid pieces, and here’s what the papers are saying today:
