Why Roger Federer will not win Wimbledon 2008

Big Rog takes on Dominik Hrbaty from 1pm BST today, bet here

Wimbledon

It has been a tough old year for Roger. Apparently Grand Slams don’t come quite so easily anymore and maybe, just maybe, he’s about to surrender his Wimbledon crown. Rafael Nadal tops the list of the young pretenders ready to step into Federer’s flashy gold shoes and cream blazer, and the young Spaniard can’t possibly lose a third successive Wimbledon final. Here’s why…

Why Federer won’t make it six in a row

* Federer is having a disappointing year by his standards, losing in the semi final in Australia and enduring a crushing straight sets defeat in the final at Roland Garros.

* Rafael Nadal will head to Wimbledon in fine form, having won his fourth successive title at Roland Garros prior to his first victory at Queen’s club.

* The Spaniard convincingly beat Federer in the French Open, sealing a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 victory in just one hour and forty eight minutes.

* Nadal’s victory over Federer at the French was the most one sided men’s Grand Slam final since Jimmy Connors

Maria Sharapova learns a new sport

Russian tennis beauty becomes a quarterback, throws like a girl

Maria Sharapova

My future wife is so confident of victory in the Pacific Life Open, that she has decided to concentrate her energies on the world’s second favourite game named ‘football’. Maria Sharapova is a huge favourite in the tournament, and faces fellow hottie Daniela Hantuchova in the early hours of tonight - bet on her glorious ascent to the semis here.

Manchester Utd to kickstart the Gunners’ lament

Things don’t look good for Bolton. They are highly unlikely to use their game in hand to their advantage, and will undoubtedly continue to warm up that final drop zone place for Newcastle. Manchester Utd are 1/6 favourites to make Arsenal fans ponder their wayward form tonight, but there may be better value in backing Skybet’s 5/2 for the home side to score 4+ goals (something they have done in three of the last four meetings with Bolton at Old Trafford). Get right on it!

The Pacific Life Open (which stands in the shadow of the Miami Open later in the month, which, of course, stands in the shadow its Grand Slam tournament older brothers) is in full flow, and Andy Murray faces big-serving Ivo Karlovic later tonight. The grumpy Scot is a huge favourite to progress, so pile on his victory, and see the best odds for ties such as Nadal/ Tsonga right here on the oddschicken.

Sexy tennis dealt a huge blow

After being made to wear leggings under her tiny skirt in Qatar last week, Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the WTA Dubai Championships. She cites a ‘viral illness’, rather than ‘the suppression of her right to grunt loudly while wearing revealing outfits in less liberal cultures’ as her excuse.

Despite this devastating blow to sexiness in the women’s game, the tournament rages on and Justine Henin remains favourite.

If Sharapova-less tennis or golf don’t grab you tonight, then be sure to watch Mitchell and Webb’s brilliant sketch show (BBC2, 9pm).
