Is Hope Powell about to take Mike Newell’s job?

Irony police urgently needed at Blundell Park

Do you have one of these Mike?

Women. They get everywhere these days. Just ask Mike Newell. Having seen a female assistant referee play her part in a Luton Town defeat to QPR back in November 2006, Newell ranted:

“She should not be here. I know that sounds sexist, but I am sexist, so I am not going to be anything other than that. We have a problem in this country with political correctness, and bringing women into the game is not the way to improve refereeing and officialdom.

It is absolutely beyond belief. It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have, but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems.

This is not park football, so what are women doing here? It is tokenism, for the politically-correct idiots.”

So one can only imagine the silence at the Newell family breakfast table this morning, as he perused his Daily Mail (not one of those ubiquitous right-on digs - the story was genuinely a Mail exclusive.) The Mail revealed that one of the names in the frame to sit in the chair he’s just been booted out of is none other than England Women’s Coach, Hope Powell. A bona fide woman.

Powell had a good summer, guiding England Ladies to a creditable runners-up spot in the recent European Championship. It goes without saying, Hope Powell would be the first female to manage in the mens’ professional game. But what would you think if your club hired a lady gaffer? Fancy swapping Rafa for Rafaella? Carlo for Carla? Let us know below…

German footballer strips off to makes ends meet

No, it’s not Effenberg…

Samira Sammer

While the German men of football wile away the hours off the pitch having statues of their faces fashioned from gold, or wining and dining their closest friends, professional sportswomen don’t always have it so good. Eva Roob, a fraulein, couldn’t make ends meet playing professionally for Nuremberg, so took to doing a spot of pornography during the evenings to boost her income. But with sex scenes going on until about 5am, she complains, and training starting at 10am, it all started getting a little bit too stressful. She had to make a choice.

Sex fans will be glad to hear that she now operates under the moniker Samira Sammer, and took the fleshier of the two routes.

Argentinean footballers wade in on the ’slit-eye gesture’ racism debate

So much insensitivity, so little time…

Argentinean Ladies Football Team

Spain’s Olympic basketball and tennis teams are no strangers to pulling offensive gestures for the camera, and Argentina’s ladies football team have now contributed to the International Athletes’ Photobook of ‘Slit-Eye’ Face-Pulling.

The picture above was published in Argentinean newspaper Ole two weeks ago, and was taken long before the Spanish decided to hamper their 2016 Olympic bid.

The world needn’t worry about any repeat incident from the Argentine ladies, however, as they lost every single

Why China will be knocked out of the Olympic football tournament today

Here’s a medal that isn’t guaranteed to the hosts

Only a victory against Brazil in a few hours time will allow China’s football team to advance to the quarter-finals of the men’s football Olympic football event, and judging by the nostalgic snippet above (courtesy of Pies), the hosts’ pedigree suggests Ronaldinho et al will ruin the party.

(The clip is taken from Fantasy Football League in 1996, and we can only pray that Danny Baker has shelled out for a haircut and some trousers by now.)

Spoiler Olympic bonus: See a Brazilian lady score an impressive overhead kick at the Olympics after the jump…
